FLEMISH SCHOOL of the early 18th century. Portrait of Prince Jean-Ernest de Loewnstein-Wertheim (1667-1731), Prince Abbot of Stavelot-Malmedy and Bishop of Tournai. Oil on canvas. 90 x 70.5 cm. Restoration. Period frame with attached Prince's cap. Jean-Ernest Von LOEWENSTEIN-WERTHEIM-ROCHEFORT, born June 14, 1667 to Ferdinand-Charles de Fustenberg, Prince of the Holy Roman Empire, Administrator of Stavelot, Count and Prince of Loewenstein. In 1913, he succeeded Bishop René-François de Beauvau du Rivau as Bishop of Tournai. He died on July 26, 1931, aged 64. Younger brother of a large sibling family that included Philippe Eberhard, Abbot of Murbach and Grand Dean of Strasbourg Cathedral; and Maximilien-Charles, Governor of Milan. The Princes of Loewenstein-Wertheim are the morganatic descendants of the House of Wittelsbach, Counts of the Holy Roman Empire in 1494. After Louis III de Loewenstein (1530-1611), the family split in two, with the Loewenstein-Wertheim-Virneburg branch, a Lutheran branch, and the Loewenstein-Wertheim-Rochefort branch, a Catholic branch from which Jean-Ernest descended. In 1574, the County of Rochefort (Province of Namur) was associated with the Loewenstein-Wertheim family and the Catholic branch. They were made Prince of the Holy Roman Empire in 1711.
