Athena" cameo brooch, 3 layers on Chalcedony in 750°/00 gold and silver, stylizing the Goddess Athena in bust, straight profile, in a setting of probably fine pearls alternated with rose-cut diamonds. Cameo signed Staiger. Late 19th century. In a case in the shape of Maison Mauboussin, 3 rue Choiseul, Paris.
The divinity embodying wisdom is equipped with all her protective attributes: her shield adorned with Medusa's head, her helmet enriched with a grotesque mask sticking out its tongue to ward off the evil eye. The helmet is topped by a pet snake, which accompanies her and helps her make the right decisions.
