Round silver ewer stand decorated with friezes... - Lot 145 - FW Auction
Round silver ewer stand decorated with friezes of water leaves and pearls, and applied and repeated patterns of eight ovoid decorations with ewer on its display and flanked by reeds and vine prampres. Display stand stamped with applied arms, topped by a Marquis crown and framed with flags and a large cross of the Legion of Honor. Work of the Restoration period. Not punched. Diameter : 26,5 cm. Height : 5,4 cm. Weight : 1530 g. The blazon is that of Alexandre-Marie AGUADO, Marquis of LAS MARISMAS del GUADALQUIVIR (Seville 1784-Gijon 1842). A soldier in the Spanish army, he entered the French army in 1808 and became Colonel and Aide-de-camp to Marshal SOULT. In 1815 he started in finance in Paris where he made his fortune. In 1827, he bought the castle of Petit-Bourg in EVRY SUR SEINE and became its Mayor. In 1829, Ferdinand VII of Spain made him a Marquis for his role as a broker to the Crown and he settled permanently in Paris where he acquired the Hôtel d'Augny, rue Drouot (now the Town Hall of the 9th arrondissement), and took French nationality. In 1836, he bought the vineyard of Châteaux-Margaux which he had redecorated. A great art collector, he had an important collection of paintings, notably of the Spanish School. He was decorated with the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor and Isabella the Catholic, Commander of the Savior and Charles III. He is buried in the Père-Lachaise cemetery
