NICOLE VAYSSE (BEL/XXth CENTURY, active around... - Lot 102 - FW Auction
NICOLE VAYSSE (BEL/XXth CENTURY, active around 1970) Untitled (silver friezes) ink and gouache on paper 27.5 x 19.5 cm. Executed around 1970 PIERRE-FRANÇOIS NICOLE VAYSSE, ENIGMATIC COUPLE ON THE FRINGE OF ART BRUT The group of works by Pierre-François and Nicole Vaysse presented in this sale introduces the public to a mysterious couple of artists who worked in the shadows and in concert on a body of work as sophisticated and elegant as it is meticulous and obsessive. The Vaysse couple reveal a work that is indeed mysterious, mainly because little or nothing is currently known about this Belgian couple who have remained on the fringes of the traditional artistic circuits, despite the quality and relevance of their art. Active in Lasnes, south of Brussels, in the 1960s and 1970s, they produced a body of enigmatic, technically refined work with a rare sense of detail and pattern, with an identity of its own. Pierre-François is attached to the representation of fantastic figures that stand out from geometrically patterned backgrounds, while Nicole is more inclined towards biomorphic abstraction, working on sinuous abstract friezes often punctuated with paisley motifs, revealing an undeniable Iranian influence. This group of works comes from the artists' studio in Lasnes, a town that the couple abandoned along with all their work in the 1980s when they moved to the south of France. When the couple's home was bought, the new owners discovered the artist's entire studio, a sample of which we offer in this sale.
