Handwritten military map of the "Golfo de... - Lot 94 - FW Auction
Handwritten military map of the "Golfo de la Spetia". Commissioned by Count Marc-Pierre de Voyer d'Argenson (1696-1764). Minister and Secretary of State for War of King Louis XV (1743-1757). A friend of Voltaire, a great reformer, he was one of the main architects, along with the Marshal of Saxony, of the success of the campaign of the Austrian succession (1740-1748), crowned by the famous French victory at Fontenoy. This precious document is set in the context of this European war, which we forget also affected Italy. Indeed, Louis XV allowed the Spanish armies to cross France to confront the King of Sardinia. These military maps were certainly intended for them. Handwritten work of a remarkable finesse on tracing, with ink and wash. It is reproduced from a map of 1724. Richly captioned, it includes a scale. It is lined with a thick laid paper of the period. It bears the inscriptions "A de Genes, golfo de la Spetia" and "Calque du bureau de la marine". Provenance of a descendant of Argenson. Fading and brittleness. France 18th century. 55,5 x 65 cm
