Handwritten military map of the "surroundings... - Lot 93 - FW Auction
Handwritten military map of the "surroundings of Turin". Commissioned by Count Marc-Pierre de Voyer d'Argenson (1696-1764). Minister and Secretary of State for War of King Louis XV (1743-1757). A friend of Voltaire, a great reformer, he was one of the main architects, along with the Marshal of Saxony, of the success of the campaign of the Austrian succession (1740-1748), crowned by the famous French victory at Fontenoy. This precious document is set in the context of this European war, which we forget also affected Italy. Indeed, Louis XV allowed the Spanish armies to cross France to confront the King of Sardinia. These military maps were certainly intended for them. A remarkably fine handwritten work on tracing paper, in polychrome ink, the main strongholds are shown in red ink. It is lined with a thick laid paper of the period. Bears the inscriptions "2nd vicinity of Turin". Provenance of a descendant of Argenson. Freckles and brittleness. France Period XVIII th century. 63,5 x 66 cm
