Handwritten military map of the "rear of... - Lot 92 - FW Auction
Handwritten military map of the "rear of Genoa". Commissioned by Count Marc-Pierre de Voyer d'Argenson (1696-1764). Minister and Secretary of State for War of King Louis XV (1743-1757). A friend of Voltaire, a great reformer, he was one of the main architects, along with the Marshal of Saxony, of the success of the campaign of the Austrian succession (1740-1748), crowned by the famous French victory at Fontenoy. This precious document is set in the context of this European war, which we forget also affected Italy. Indeed, Louis XV allowed the Spanish armies to cross France to confront the King of Sardinia. These military maps were certainly intended for them. Remarkably fine handwritten work on tracing paper, in polychrome ink, wash and watercolour enhancement. It is marked "4th Stocking Sheet". It is captioned for the different types of roads as well as colour coded for woods and lands. It is lined with a thick period laid paper. Bears the inscriptions " rear of Genoa ". Provenance of a descendant of Argenson. Some foxing and brittleness. France Period XVIII th century. 62 x 76 cm
