Georges BERTIN SCOTT de PLAGNOLLES (1873-... - Lot 105 - FW Auction
Georges BERTIN SCOTT de PLAGNOLLES (1873- 1942) Cossacks on horseback during a review. (Probably during the trip of Nicolas II to France in 1901) Watercolor and gouache enhancement on paper. 41 x 29 cm Georges Bertin Scott de Plagnolle, son of the painter Henri Louis Scott de Plagnolle, was brought up in a studio, and very quickly developed a passion for drawing. He studied at the fine arts school and in 1897 he became a member of the French Artists Society. He worked for various periodicals and his first drawing was published in the Illustration in 1892. In 1912 he was a war correspondent in the Balkans and worked on the portrait of King Constantine of Greece. During the First World War he was a war correspondent and published the famous drawing "On ne passe pas" in the Illustration of August 8, 1914. In 1916 he was appointed painter to the army. Between the two wars he will make many portraits of personalities of which the portrait of the Marshal Foch and the allies. Our drawing represents two Cossacks on horseback, wearing the big outfit, with the Russian cavalry in the background during a review. It is probably during the arrival of Tsar Nicolas II that George Scott painted these Cossacks, perhaps for a newspaper.
