Michel BONNAND (Born in 1935) Large direct-hewn... - Lot 138 - FW Auction
Michel BONNAND (Born in 1935) Large direct-hewn wooden sculpture representing a young woman with feet named "Véronique". Signed in hollow on the back "Bonnand". Executed in 1982. Dimensions: Height: 166 cm; Length: 46 cm; Depth: 50 cm. Missing at the front left corner of the base. History: Following an exhibition by Michel Bonnand in Lille in 1981, at the Schème Gallery, a local couple asked him if he could make a sculpture of their daughter, aged about 17. The appointment was made at his studio and he made several preparatory sketches as well as terracotta portraits. Rather than carving a classical full-length portrait, he preferred to work with the girl's first name "Veronique", superimposing the theme of the veil of Saint Veronique with that of the little meadow flower and also the matador's cape pass which explains the movement. In 2018, thirty-six years later, Véronique contacted Michel Bonnand, informing him that she had been living abroad for more than thirty years and that following the death of her parents, she wanted to put this sculpture up for sale.
