Napoleon I Emperor. Letter addressed to the... - Lot 141 - FW Auction
Napoleon I Emperor. Letter addressed to the Duke of Feltre on 10 June 1810. It mentions coastal artillery pieces and various fortifications, notably on the island of Elba. Also, of an exchange of troops so that it would be better adapted to the environment. Attached to this letter is the acknowledgement of receipt. Letter dictated to his secretary, signed NAP by the Emperor. "Dear Duke de Feltre, no review has been made for the armament of the coasts of Tuscany, no measures have been taken to protect these coasts. At the Escole bridge, there are about ten pieces of cast iron cannon on the ground and without a mount. It would be advisable 1° to remove these cast iron pieces and to replace them with iron pieces that would be taken from (...) or from Ferrara, 2° to put them on a mount and to make them in a battery suitable to protect the coasting trade. Give me a report on the bridge of Escole and on the efforts of St Catherine, St Philippe, l'Etoile and la Roca. I am told that in Porto ferraio the carriages are worm-eaten, so that if the place was under siege, it would be obliged to surrender for lack of carriages, after a few days of fire. Give orders that the foreign battalion in Porto ferraio should go to Corsica and be replaced by a battalion of refractory conscripts from the Mediterranean Regiment. This foreign battalion inspires less confidence than the Mediterranean regiment. Give me a report on the situation of the fortification works on the island of Elba, on what has been done and what remains to be done. And on that I pray to God that he has you in his holy custody. At St Cloud, June 10, 1810. NAP"
