Georges BERTIN SCOTT de PLAGNOLLES (1873-... - Lot 9 - FW Auction
Georges BERTIN SCOTT de PLAGNOLLES (1873- 1942) Cossacks on horseback during a review. (Probably during Nicholas II's trip to France in 1901) Watercolour and gouache on paper. 41 x 29 cm Georges Bertin Scott de Plagnolle, son of the painter Henri Louis Scott de Plagnolle, was brought up in a workshop, and very quickly developed a passion for drawing. He studied fine arts and in 1897 he became a member of the French Artists' Society. He worked for various periodicals and his first drawing was published in 1892. In 1912 he was a war correspondent in the Balkans and worked on the portrait of King Constantine of Greece. During the First World War he was a war correspondent and published the famous drawing "On ne passe pas" in the illustration of August 8, 1914. In 1916 he was appointed army painter. Between the two wars he painted many portraits of personalities, including the portrait of Marshal Foch and the allies.  Our drawing shows two Cossacks on horseback, wearing the big outfit, with the Russian cavalry in the background during a review. It was probably during the visit of Tsar Nicholas II that George Scott painted these Cossacks, perhaps for a newspaper.
