Jean DUNAND (1877 - 1942) "Christ in majesty",... - Lot 200 - FW Auction
Jean DUNAND (1877 - 1942) "Christ in majesty", 1937. Important wooden panel with a rectangular view partially covered with gilded stucco in imitation of hammered metal and painted in a polychrome mosaic style integrating in the upper part blue glass cabochons and brass decorative elements (small chips and missing parts). Original gilded wood frame. Signed at the bottom right. Dimensions with frame : Height 405 cm - Length 206 cm Provenance : former collection of Jean Dunand, remained since in the family. History: our model is a preparatory model in real size made by Jean Dunand for a mosaic panel that he had to present at the International Exhibition of Arts and Techniques in Paris in 1937. The piece could not be completed in time, it is this model that was exposed during the event in the hope of attracting an order. The left part of the panel was later reduced. Bibliography: Félix Marcilhac & Amélie Marcilhac, Jean Dunand, Editions Norma, 2020, p. 375 for an archive photograph of our model.
