Pair of English "Dog-lock" flintlock pistols... - Lot 43 - FW Auction
Pair of English "Dog-lock" flintlock pistols with strong rifling and round barrels finished with a bead. Barrels, breech-ends and locks engraved with floral motifs. Flat locks both signed "BRISTOL", flat hammers with espalet fixed by the interior provided with a safety back by floating hook. All fittings are plain iron; walnut stocks also plain, moulded shafts; wooden ramrods terminating in an iron tip. The woods were probably refinished in the late 19th century.Period, Great Britain, 17th centuryThis pair was shown in 1972 to the Curator of the Solingen Museum who confirmed the period as well as the origin. Length 54 cm, calibre 11,5 mm PROVENANCE Paul Washer Collection I -Liberty These pistols are typical of the soldiers of Cromwell of the English Revolution of 1642. The system known as "Dog Lock", safety catch floating at the back of the hammer is characteristic of this period as much as of the area of the United Kingdom. The length of the barrels as well as the shape of the butts with the ovoid caps is a heritage of the morphology of the weapons of the end of the 16th century. Our pair has a refined style. Although reserved for a certain elite, this makes them robust combat pistols. Product of a troubled era that was this English revolution, no one doubts that they knew the battlefields in the pair of cast iron of a rider. II - Conquest A period of peace and stability returned to the United Kingdom. The May Flower landed on the new continent. Settlers and other trappers flocked there with the support of the British Crown. The extension of the Empire is being developed. Once again, the men had to equip themselves to deal with the wild fauna and some recalcitrant natives. Rifles, muskets, sabres and of course the famous flintlock weapons called "Dog Lock" similar to our pistols were brought from the old island. III - Independence A child who grows up must in his natural process "kill his father in order to become master of his destiny". 1775 comes the American War of Independence. Here again, arms flowed in from the old continent, especially from France, which sided with the insurgents. Once again, the few veterans of the English Revolution who had left to colonize the New World were recalled. The "Dog Lock" are back on the battlefield and are victorious. Independent America was born. It would be difficult to be exact about what our guns have experienced, they speak only a language of lead, gunpowder and thick smoke but they remain a symbol between freedom, conquest and independence of the Anglo-American people.
