Exceptional coat of arms of the Princes... - Lot 121 - FW Auction
Exceptional coat of arms of the Princes of Arenberg. Embroidery in bas-relief in threads of silk and silver threads, representing the Arenberg shield of three quintefeuilles in Vermilion threads on a red silk background with silver threads framing. The shield is flanked by a lion and a griffin crawling on silver wire scrolls. The bottom of a red coat lined with ermine and surmounted by the cap of the princes. 29.5 x 25 cm. Work from the 19th century. Some wear and tear; the cross is missing from the crown. Ecu probably made for an interior banner at a feast or to mark a place in church stalls, tradition for a great lord or knight of an order. The arms of the princes of Arenberg are three gold quintels on a Gules background, but here they are silver on a Gules background; a consequence of the wear of the vermeil threads turned to silver threads.
