Léon BONNAT (1833-1922) Christ on the cross Gouache on strong paper, small stitches and small lack at the corners, very slight scratches. 31.5 x 22.1 cm Very beautiful gouache representing Christ on the cross with his eyes raised to heaven. Léon Bonnat was born in Bayonne on 20 June 1833, and became a pupil at the Paris School of Fine Arts in 1854, under the professorship of Léon Coigniet. He received the second prize in the Prix de Rome in 1857 with his "Resurrection of Lazarus". A very popular portraitist, he was also asked to decorate the Pantheon with the martyr of Saint-Denis. He was head of the painting workshop at the Beaux-Arts from 1888 to 1905, and had many pupils including Georges Braque, Gustave Caillebotte and Raoul Dufy. He died in Mouchy-Saint-Eloi in 1922.
